Canine Influenza – Who Is at Risk?

Canine influenza is on the rise. This highly contagious respiratory virus can present like kennel cough, allergies and other illnesses. However, if your dog gets the flu, it can lead to pneumonia and other secondary infections, making recovery that much harder.

Your dog can contract the flu from boarding facilities, day care or dog parks, or even your clothes/shoes if you came in contact with a pet who has it. If you frequent these places with your dog, you may want to get the influenza vaccine, which is highly effective!

There has been no known transmission of Canine Influenza to humans to date. There have been rare but notable cases of cats contracting it, so if your dog becomes sick, you may want to quarantine him/her until you know what it is.
